Established in 1977, the library is an integral element of the Jerusalem Fund's educational services. With the establishment of the Palestine Center in 1991, the library collection was honed toward issues relating to Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and U.S. foreign policy toward the Middle East in addition to its collection of books about the culture and history of historic Palestine. With the loss of the founding chairman of the Fund, Dr. Hisham B. Sharabi, in January 2005, a decision was made to rename the library in his honor and to dedicated it toward his vision of a more equitable and politically just world. Special Collections
With nearly 4,000 holdings, the library acquires new books, manuscripts, pamphlets, dissertations, and films on an ongoing basis. It holds a number of rare and out-of-print books and maintains active subscriptions to some 30 journals and newspapers in English and Arabic, including full periodical collections for the Journal of Palestine Studies and Middle East Policy Journal.
The library has recently acquired the personal collections of notable intellectuals including sociologist Dr. Samih Farsoun, former U.S. ambassador to Iraq Dr. Edward Peck, political activist Dr. Fayez Sayegh and historian Dr. Hisham B. Sharabi. The library welcomes all donated books that are relevant to the history of Palestine, U.S. policy toward Palestine and/or the Middle East, and Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on final status issues. Donations of private collections are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
