What does it mean to cover conflict in Palestine for the Arab and American media? What challenges do journalists face in trying to report facts from local and foreign governments and Arab and American editors? What effect is the coverage of the conflict having on public opinion and why? What is the status of Palestinian journalism and what does this mean for the Palestine struggle?
Shireen Abu Aqleh is an Al Jazeera Satellite Channel Correspondent in the Palestinian Occupied Territories and Israel. She has spent the past twelve years reporting the on going conflict with all its aspects – political, social and economical, making features, as well as interviewing the newsmakers and personalities in the region. Ms. Abu Aqleh is a lecturer in the Birzeit University Media Institute and a consultant for MIFTAH. In 2001, she was awarded the Dubai Press Club and was named a Media Personality of the year.
Taghreed El-Khodary is a visiting scholar in the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment. Since 2001, she has been based in the Gaza Strip, reporting on political developments for the New York Times and serving as a senior analyst for the International Crisis Group. Ms. El-Khodary has also worked as a correspondent for Al-Hayat/LBC TV and as a producer for Agence France-Presse, Al Jazeera, and Middle East Broadcasting Center. She has been an assistant producer on documentaries by National Geographic, PBS, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and ITV.
