PALESTINE
DIABETES INSTITUTE
| The Palestine Diabetes Institute addresses the growing diabetes epidemic in Palestine through education and treatment. It is the first such facility in Palestine. | |
|
Diabetes is effecting Palestinians in
disproportionate numbers. According to the
Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committee,
18 percent of the population has diabetes
mellitus. While the disease can be
managed with careful medical treatment and
persistent follow-up, most Palestinians
suffering from diabetes do not have the
necessary access to affordable treatment and
can suffer serious complications such as
blindness, kidney failure and circulation
problems that necessitate amputations. The
problem is compounded by the unemployment,
poverty and daily stresses brought on by an
entrenched occupation that controls all aspects
of life. To meet this great need, The Jerusalem Fund established the Palestine Diabetes Institute in the central West Bank town of Al-Bireh. The PDI patients come from all over the West Bank, but the distances and hardships make reaching the Institute difficult for those in the northern or southern end of the West Bank. This is why we hope to establish new branches of the PDI in towns like Nablus, Hebron and Gaza in the future, which would help to make quality treatment for those suffering from diabetes more easily accessible. |
