Palestinians and the
Jewish State: 60 Years of Exile and
Dispossession
A 15 May
2008 Palestine Center symposium examines
Palestinians and the Jewish state 60 years
after the Nakba. A panel of academic experts
addresses the effect of Zionism—in all its
variations—on a final peace agreement between
Israel and the Palestinians, the status of
Israel’s Palestinian citizens and how the
events of 1948 shape what is happening today.
The three experts were Dr. Salman Abu
Sitta, Founder and President of Palestine
Land Society in the U.K; Mr. Nimer Sultany
from Harvard Law School; and
Dr.
Donald Wagner, Professor of Religion and
Middle Eastern Studies at North Park
University in Illinois, with
Dr.
Subhi Ali, chairman of The Jerusalem Fund's Board
of Directors, as moderator.

The Palestinian National Movement: What
Went Wrong?
By Ahmad S. Khalidi
Mr. Ahmad S.
Khalidi argues that while Israel’s
responsibility for the Palestinian predicament
is unquestionable, the current Palestinian woes
are not just about Israeli occupation. The
bitter truth is that the Palestinian national
movement has proven to be both brittle and
inconsistent. Khalidi delivered his remarks at
the third Hisham B. Sharabi Memorial Lecture on
10 April 2008 and is published within the
Palestine Center's Distinguished Lecture
Series.

Arms Export Control Act: Israeli
Breaches and U.S. Indulgence Result in
Palestinian and Lebanese Civilian Casualties
By Michael F. Brown
Israel's violations of the Arms
Export Control Act (AECA) are increasingly
countenanced by conservative and liberal
officials alike in Washington, DC. Twenty-six
years ago, Washington conservatives were at
least willing to apply mild penalties for
Israel's misdeeds with American weaponry in
Lebanon. Today, liberals are largely silent and
conservatives indulgent of Israel's
misapplication of American firepower in Lebanon
in 2006 and throughout the past decade in the
Gaza Strip with flechettes, F-16s and
Caterpillar bulldozers. The damage to American
integrity is significant and noted widely by
people in the region.

The Nexus Between Palestine, Iraq &
Lebanon
By Hani A. Faris, Ph.D.
Since ancient times, Palestine, Iraq
and Lebanon have shared a cultural, religious
and social bond. Today, they share a common
reality—a state of war. In this new
publication, Dr. Hani Faris debates whether the
three wars waged on each country, in which the
U.S. is directly involved in or in support of,
is a chance occurrence or share a common cause
and serve the same interest. Dr. Faris details
and provides supporting evidence on the four
elements that form this nexus between the three
wars: the principle of national security; the
ideology developed to rationalize and promote
all three wars; policy tools adopted to aid the
war effort; and diplomacy used to ensure that
no settlement of the conflicts is reached
unless it is that of the current U.S.
administration.
Dr. Faris also analyzes the Bush administration's policies and its approach towards the Middle East and argues that stability will never be reached in the region unless all three conflicts are resolved.

the 1967 War: The Impact of a Prolonged
Occupation

The edited remarks in this online publication
were delivered at the 5 June 2007 Palestine
Center symposium, "40 Years after the 1967 War:
The Impact of a Prolonged Occupation." The five
panelists are distinguished academics and
diplomats with decades of experience and
knowledge of the Middle East.
They addressed the role of the
international community in the conflict, the
Johnson administration's handling of the
escalating crisis that led to the 1967 war, the
Israeli, American and Palestinian dimension to
the conflict, the effect the 1967 war had on
Israeli society and Palestine's socioeconomic
potential as well as the threats and
obstacles facing it.
The five panelists
were Mr. Alvaro de Soto, former U.N.
Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace
Process; Dr. William Quandt, Professor of
Politics, University of Virginia and author of
"Peace Process: American Diplomacy and the
Arab-Israeli Conflict since 1967" (Brookings,
2005); Ambassador Afif Safieh, Head of the PLO
Mission, Washington, DC; Dr. Herbert
Kelman, Professor of Social Ethics,
Emeritus, at Harvard University, former
Director of the Program on International
Conflict Analysis and Resolution at Harvard's

Strategic Planning
Consultant.

War Crimes Litigation in U.S. Courts:
The Caterpillar Case
By Gwynne Skinner
In
this new Palestine Center publication, Gwynne
Skinner addresses war crime litigation in U.S.
courts through the case of Corrie et al. v.
Caterpillar, which, in addition to Rachel's
parents, includes five Palestinians
representing themselves and family
members—including children—who were killed
or injured when the Israeli Army used
Caterpillar bulldozers to demolish their homes
without notice.
The lawsuit, one of several civil lawsuits
currently working their way through the federal
court system in the United States attempting to
hold U.S. corporations accountable for
complicity in human rights violations abroad,
seeks to hold Caterpillar liable because it has
for years supplied the Israeli Army with
bulldozers and other assistance while knowing
that such are regularly used in the demolition
of civilian homes in the Occupied Palestinian
Territory in violation of customary
international humanitarian law.
The plaintiffs allege that Caterpillar's sales
to Israel are illegal under international law
because of Caterpillar's knowledge that such
demolitions are war crimes.

Palestine and the Middle East in a Global Context
Free!
The 2005
Annual Conference Proceedings
reflect the discussion of developments in
Palestine, Lebanon and Syria; U.S. efforts to
"spread democracy" in the Middle East; the
extent to which Abbas' administration has
influenced prospects for a political settlement
of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and more.
Held at the Palestine Center on 18 November
2005, this conference brought together a broad
spectrum of scholars, experts and activists to
analyze salient developments in Palestine and
the Middle East and how the policies of the
rising powers in Africa, Asia and Latin America
have affected the political and economic
development of the region. The proceedings also
provide a prescription for future pathways for
those involved in the Middle East.

Occupation to the Palestinians
This
Palestine Center Special
Report
by sociologist Souad Dajani analyzes the
nature and effects of the 37-year Israeli
occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and
East Jerusalem. This time period has seen
continued damage, destruction and loss of
Palestinian life and property. Today more than
ever, it is imperative that Palestinians
estimate the costs they have sustained in the
West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. For

The Palestinian-Israeli Impasse:
Has U.S. Policy Run its Course?
The
2001 Annual Conference Proceedings
, which mark the 10th anniversary of the
Palestine Center, address the pitfalls and
possibilities of U.S. policy toward the Middle
East and Central Asia, with special focus on
the Palestinian Israeli conflict. Held less
than two months after the tragic and fateful
events of 11 September 2001, the conference
papers reflect how and why this long-running
conflict is central to understanding how the
United States is perceived in the Arab and
Muslim worlds.

The Conflict in the Middle East:
Post-Oslo Myth and Reality
The 2000-01 Compendium
focuses on the situation in the
occupied Palestinian Territories during what is
arguably the bloodiest 12-month period in
Palestinian-Israeli relations since 1967. While
the official record and personal accounts of
the talks surrounding the July 2000 Camp David
talks hosted by U.S. President Bill Clinton
were not released until December, the Center
provided insightful critiques of the
negotiations and the ongoing events in the
Territories at the start of the second
Palestinian intifada.
