The Ghassan Kanafani Cultural Foundation
Location: Beirut, Lebanon
Mission: To provide preschool education to all Palestinian children in the refugee camps of Lebanon by establishing specialized preschools for children with disabilities, providing occupational therapy and building customized assistive aids to continue this therapy at home, training community workers in habilitation of preschoolers with disabilities and running children’s public libraries.
Project: The Jerusalem
Fund has a long-standing relationship with the
Ghassan Kanafani Cultural
Foundation. Since the habilitation preschool
is the sole center of its
kind in the Palestinian communities in
Lebanon, continuing staff
education is an integral part of the
foundation’s strategic plan. With
the help of The Jerusalem Fund, specialized
courses were
offered for their staff in child habilitation,
rights of the disabled,
working for development in under-resourced
communities and therapy for
women with disabilities.
The Jerusalem Fund was also excited to support the preschool’s tricycle project for children with cerebral palsy. Tricycles encourage motor activity for children with cerebral palsy by improving equilibrium while moving the joints of the upper and lower extremities, and teaching them how to maneuver into the space
surrounding
them. The Jerusalem Fund enabled the preschool
to
purchase these tricycles customized to meet
the needs of the
children.
Another worthy project that was funded by The Jerusalem Fund was the Foundation’s occupational therapy workshop which provides assistive aids for the children registered in the preschool to use at home free of charge with occupational therapy training for their parents. The carpentry tools were old and required frequent, costly maintenance, and they had run out of upholstery material. The Jerusalem Fund met the need for new basic tools to manufacture and enhance the quality of the work to best promote the function of the children and their families at home.
With your help, The Jerusalem Fund will continue to support programs such as this one that seek to bring a sense of normalcy in a hostile world. Your tax-deductible contribution is an investment in the future of the Palestinian people. Together, we can turn anger into optimism and fear into hope.
