We are being pulled apart 2012 ©Mona El Bayoumi

Mona El Bayoumi was born in Alexandria, Egypt and raised by parents who taught at Michigan State University. El-Bayoumi had tremendous exposure to issues of social justice around the world and in the United States, and it is these themes that permeate and guide her work as an artist. The struggles in Palestine, Egypt, the Arab world in general, Iran, Central America, South Africa and Eritrea are of significant influence, and she reifies the nature of art as a force in achieving social change.
